Meet our new equity release adviser
25 January 2021
A veteran in the equity release industry
At 55Plus Equity Release, we’re especially proud of our team of expert advisers, who share the same ethical code as us. As a company, we’re always on the lookout for talented equity release advisers and they don’t come much more experienced than Mike, who has been working in financial services since 1979 and advising in equity release since the late 1990s, joining the Equity Release Council in 2012.
Within the equity release field, Mike’s worked for a few different companies, including his own for a while: “When I set up MBG Equity Release, it was working but I didn’t want to spend all my time bogged down in data protection, consumer rights and so on. I want to meet people,” explains Mike.
Ever since his realisation that his true passion lay with client-facing work, Mike has sought out the most ethical and client-centric employers, only wanting to work for companies who truly put their customers first. “I’m in my older years, I don’t garden, don’t golf; I get my greatest pleasure from driving solutions for clients and, if I can do that without pressure, then that suits me,” he continues.
A perfect match
55Plus Equity Release seemed like an obvious chose to Mike when he moved on from a previous employer because, as well as giving him the freedom to pursue his own business, our values are aligned. “I love equity release with a passion,” describes Mike, “I’ve never in my financial services life had a complaint, I take exceptional care with my clients.”
At 55Plus, we know it’s our duty to promote transparent communications with our clients, seeking to give them independent and trustworthy advice, an ethos that Mike also shares: “We’re dealing with an older population; it’s extremely important that they fully understand everything about equity release. The opportunity to ask questions, involve family and make sure they’re comfortable is essential. The relationship between my clients and me is the most important thing; I want them to feel my confidence but also my empathy.”
Equity release career highlights
It would be understandable to assume that for an equity release adviser with as much experience as Mike, his career highlight would be starting his own firm or a financially noteworthy deal, but Mike’s career highs are much more humble.
“My career highlights are not personal, as such, they’re just occasions that have given me huge satisfaction in the work I’ve done, particularly the clients I’m involved with. I always pick a highlight of the year and it’s often the client who has given me the greatest satisfaction in my involvement with them, usually where my skills have been paramount in arriving at the conclusion.”
Outside of work
When he’s not working, Mike enjoys listening to music – “as long as it’s good,” he adds, although he’s particularly fond of progressive rock after playing music (primarily the drums) in his younger years. “My other great passion is Rotary International; I’m the secretary of the local club and I’m very involved in it. I also enjoy all sport – viewing, not participating”.
Welcoming Mike to the 55Plus Equity Release team
The team at 55Plus Equity Release have loved welcoming the new adviser, with our founder and Managing Director, Jan Johnson, commenting: “We’re so happy to have such a talented and experienced adviser joining us, especially given that it now means we can offer equity release advice and products to customers in Scotland, where Mike is based. We only ever work with advisers who, like us, share the same passion for transparent and impartial advice, guiding our customers to making an informed decision and Mike undoubtedly shares this common goal. I’m really looking forward to seeing what he brings to the company.”
If you’d like to talk about whether equity release might be right for you with Mike, or any other of our advisers with a passion for honesty and integrity, then please get in touch.
